The days became shorter but the nights grew no longer
I walked, stumbled and became enshrouded in mist
It was not as it was meant to be but neither was I
Created in light, yet forged in said light’s absence
Produced from truth, but born again by deceit
As abstract as a rainbow that was a figment of imagination
Falling and rising but continuing to plunge
I attempted to purge myself of myself
All deeds of evil but the only evil is ignorance
I know not, I know of, I know everything, I know nothing
My eyes open
My heart stops
Everyone dies
I awaken

What is life
that’s the question here
is it fake or is it somewhat real
is it all about disaster where is the peace
it’s like the whole world is getting ready for world war 3
who is to blame we all demand but not 1 of us will take a stand
God gave us a place flowing with milk and honey
but all we wanted was position, power, and money
we are all inside a bomb getting ready to set it off
but let’s stop this bomb and have great second thoughts
let’s think of the world as it once use to be with love, miracles, and great memories
God created a special place now let’s bring back the future of beautiful days
we are not sure for what will happen
only God knows so let’s all slow down all our bad actions.

“Special Someone”

by Janese Williams

I HAVE A SPECIAL SOMEONE WHO I LOVED SO DEARLY
I USED TO TALK WITH HIM EVERYDAY
HE TOOK A PIECE OF MY HEART WITH HIM ONCE
HE PASSED AWAY YOU ASKED WHO IS MY SPECIAL SOMEONE
HE IS JOHNNIE HOGAN MY GRANDDAD HE USED TO SING SO MANY SONGS TO
ME WHEN I WAS LITTLE EVEN WHEN I GOT OLDER
I WISH WE CAN HAVE A TALK RIGHT NOW BUT I KNOW IT’S
NOT POSSIBLE I ALWAYS FIND MYSELF SINGING ALWAYS AND FOREVER
BECAUSE HE SAID HE WILL BE WITH ME EVEN IN DEATH
MY GRANDDAD HAS ALWAYS TOLD ME I’LL BE SOMEBODY AND I KNOW THAT
I WISH HE COULD SHARE IN ALL MY HAPPY MOMENTS WITH ME
SO GRANDDAD I WILL SAY THIS YOU ALWAYS SAID I WAS YOUR SPECIAL SOMEONE
BECAUSE I REMIND YOU OF MY MOMMA BUT I HAVE A UNIQUE STYLE
OF MY OWN A TWINKLE IN MY EYES
GUESS WHAT YOU ARE ALWAYS MY SPECIAL SOMEONE EVEN IN DEATH
LOVE YOU I’LL SEE YOU IN AGAIN SO FOR NOW SEE YOU LATER

“How Many Times”

by Janese Williams

I HEAR YOU ASKING ME WHEN AM I GOING TO LET YOU INSIDE MY HEART
EVERYTIME I FEEL LIKE LETTING YOU IN YOU GO AND LIE TO ME
I CAN’T TRUST YOU LIKE BEFORE HOW MANY TIMES I ALLOW YOU TO COME BACK
IN MY LIFE KNOWING YOU WOULD HURT ME ALL OVER AGAIN
I CRY YOU JUST LAUGH WITHOUT A CARE IN THE WORLD FOR ME
THEN YOU SAY I LOVE YOU DON’T YOU TRUST ME
HOW MANY TIMES HAVE I HEARD YOU SPEAK THOSE WORDS
I KNOW THAT’S NOT TRUE BUT MY LOVE FOR YOU HURTS TO
MY CORE KNOWING YOUR’RE GOING TO HURT ME YET AGAIN
I HAVE SOMETHING TO TELL YOU I FOUND SOMEONE
WHO TAUGHT ME HOW TO LOVE MYSELF
PLEASE DON’T SPEAK I SEE MORE CLEARLY YOU ASK
WHO TAUGHT ME HOW TO LOVE HIS NAME IS JESUS HE
SAID TO ME WHEN YOU SEEK ME I CAN SHOW YOU HOW TO LOVE
YOURSELF AND MY FATHER BY GOING THROUGH ME
SO AS I STARE INTO THE MIRROR NOW BECAUSE I CAN TRULY SAY I LOVE ME
BECAUSE GOD LOVES ME AND HE TELLS ME SO

“The Blind Side” Film Review

by Cameron Moore

“The Blind Side” is the true story of Michael Oher, a homeless teenager who was able to overcome great obstacles in order to become a first round draft pick in the NFL. Michael Oher had a rough childhood as he didn’t know his father and his mother was addicted to drugs. He was in and out of foster homes and at times living on the street. The football coach at Wingate, a private school, saw football potential in Michael and got him admitted into the prestigious school. However, he had learning disabilities and still did not have a permanent home. Leigh Anne Tuohy, the mother of a Wingate student, Collins, and wife of the owner of several Taco Bell restaurants, finds out about Michael’s predicament and invites him to stay the night at their home. Once Michael is in the Tuohy home, a close relationship develops between him and the Tuohys. The one night stay turns into a permanent living situation for Oher. Leigh Anne makes it her personal mission to make sure Michael has everything he needs emotionally and academically to graduate from high school and to get admitted to Ole Miss. After a successful college football campaign, Oher was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in the first round in 2009, thus fulfilling his dream.

This movie has it all. As you watch it, you experience the emotions of both sadness and joy, as you watch this young man go from being homeless to being drafted in the first round of the 2009 NFL draft. One of the saddest parts of the film is where Leigh Anne goes looking for Oher’s mother. You are able to see the awful environment in which he has grown up, including drugs and filth. On the other hand, one of the happiest scenes in the film is when Leigh Anne is having a meal with some of her wealthy white lady friends. They are discussing the possible adoption of Oher by the Tuohy family. One of the women remarks that Leigh Anne should really be concerned about the welfare of her beautiful, white daughter Collins. Leigh Anne tells the women they should be ashamed of themselves for thinking that way.

There are also many scenes that will have you laughing. For instance, in one game scene, Oher blocks an opposing team’s player clear off the field. After the whistle, Oher says, “Sorry, Coach. I stopped when I heard the whistle.” The coach asks where Oher was taking the opposing player. Oher responds, “The bus. It was time for him to go home.” In that same game, the referee throws a flag on Oher. The coach asks why he threw the flag. The referee responds, “excessive blocking.”

The sacrifices that the Tuohy family was willing to make for a complete stranger are inspiring. Sandra Bullock received an Oscar for her portrayal of Leigh Anne Tuohy. Other actors you may recognize in the film include Kathy Bates as Miss Sue and country singer Tim McGraw as Sean Tuohy. This movie was nominated for Best Picture at the 82nd annual Academy Awards, but lost to “The Hurt Locker”. I haven’t seen “The Hurt Locker”, but having seen “The Blind Side”, I find it hard to believe there was a better film released in 2009. I give this movie four stars and highly recommend it to anyone of any age.

“Ode to Teenage Fathers”

by Adell Badgett

I’d rather pull up a middle finger than give a smile to you.
Took 14 years just for my dad to say “I’m proud of you”.
You just wait, ‘Cause in my tears, I’ll be drowning you.
Take this as a lesson, if you fail, I’ll be grounding you.

12 ft. under,
With the fishes you’ll share a supper.
No thanks to my dad, give all the credit to my mother.

Who am I kidding?
My dad raised 5 children.
If it wasn’t for the child support checks I wouldn’t be living…

I would’ve, Still been living in homeless shelters,
And would’ve still been begging other people to help us.
Old scarves help us warm up in the cold weather.
And whether My Mom is mad,
My dad is bad, (just know that,)
He helped me through the tough times I had, and…

No matter if I’m going through the thick and thin,
I’ll always love my dad until the end…

“Life is a Game”

by Cameron Moore

Life is a joke, life is a game
But what happens when all we have left is pain
When we wake up and it hurts, we go to sleep and it hurts and it just hurts too much
When the people love, love just isn’t here anymore and it feels like a punch
A strike to the body and spit in our face
And all of a sudden, we’re uncertain of place
We’re uncertain of race
And most importantly we’re uncertain of haste
Where it would have been wiser to be spending our time
Seeing the regrets of our past, the so called mountain to climb
What we could have done instead of what we did
Maybe so-and-so wasn’t as bad as i thought, maybe even a friend
We think of how we laugh, we think of how we smile
We think of everything we did, at least for a little while
Wanting to change every moment awake
And wanting to change it just for our sake
To make life easier and slightly more livable
Thinking of the biggest moments we had, could have been more pivotal
So we die and we don’t know why we live
And we don’t understand why, why we didn’t give
